Heartbroken

Today was "the day" for the minions. They are five-and-a-half months old. 5 ½ months. They are big enough and mature enough to have their "procedures", but they are still babies. We planned the procedures so they could be together. And, then it all went awry.

Bee went through her surgery and micro-chipping like a real trooper. She is very healthy. She is also smart, cooperative, and a little lady.

Clyde was microchipped, but he cannot be neutered. During his pre-surgical exam, there was some question about his heart. X-rays showed that Clyde has a very enlarged heart. I am quite stunned at the films of Clyde’s heart.

Dr. D. took films of Bee’s heart to compare to Clyde’s. Bee’s heart is normal in size and shape. Clyde’s heart is more than twice the size it should be, and is very abnormal in shape and appearance. Clyde’s lungs are also affected, showing congestion associated with the enlarged heart. In addition to this, his liver is also compromised. His liver enzymes are quite elevated.

Brother and sister stayed together. I picked them both up after meeting with Dr. D. They came home, and were very happy to be reunited with the others. Bee is groggy, but sleeping it off with Stella. Clyde took his place on the top of the cat tree, after being reassured by Mom that all is well.

For now, Clyde has no idea that anything is wrong. He has started Lasix treatment. He will be monitored very closely. Our goal is to stabilize him. We want to make him comfortable so he can play and just be Clyde. If we can do that, he may live for (up to) five years. This will take him at an early age. We know that.

We are heartbroken for Clyde. He has had more than his share of ills. They are not connected, either. He is a trooper to have gone through all of this with a strong spirit. We are proud of our Sweet Boy. He is total confidence and never gives up. He has an attitude of, "I got dis!" He is full of love for everyone: human, cat, dog. And, he deserves love and happiness in return. Clyde, "we got dis", Sweet Boy.

  1. How heartbreaking for Clyde. I had a dog with a significant heart murmur. One vet mentioned heart surgery. I said no because people have a hard time perking up after heart surgery much less a dog. The dog lived to be 15. I hope Clyde should be so lucky.

  2. Hi Annie - I just hopped back in my hammock a minute and saw your title.....so so hard to know these things about our fur babies, and feel somewhat helpless. Sweet Clyde. Hoping he has a full and rich however many years he is given.

  3. Clyde, five years isn't a really long time, but it is enough to give and get lots and lots of love and happiness. When people say someone has a big heart, it means that they are kind and generous, and that is exactly what your human parents are. They will do everything they can to give you a terrific life. You are loved by so many and will be in everyone's prayers, including our mom's. We are sending lots of purrs and POTP. We all send oodles and oodles of love. XOCK, Mom Janet, angel Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo, Cooper Murphy and Sawyer

  7. Annie, I know how helpless this sad news makes you feel and I feel very sorry. I'm so glad that you are such a great care giver so Clyde will have the best of care. In a way Clyde has been lucky landing at your place because you certainly have given the best of care otherwise he would probably not be alive right now, poor little creature. He was brought to you to enrich your lives and ours. I always enjoy updates form Bee and Clyde. They bring big smiles on my face every-time.

Sending warm hugs and prayers. ❤️

  10. I'm very sad to hear of Clyde's condition. He's fortunate to have you caring for him, and I'm sure he will return the favor in lots of purrs. We adopted a kitten that ended up with FIV. It was heartbreaking to have to say goodbye.

  11. So sorry to hear that news! That little guy so deserves a break--his indomitable spirit reminds me a lot of Frodo--Clyde could not have found a better home to live out his years though--he did get a lucky break there- in the company of his sister and other human and animals who love him. I shudder to think what other owners would have done with Clyde! We are sending you love! and a special hug for Clyde!

  23. Oh, I'm so sorry for your heartbreaking news. It always seems so unfair when a little one has such serious health issues and you have to change your expectations about what their life will be. Hopefully his conditions can be managed with medications. I have no doubt that you will make sure little Clyde lives his life to the fullest.

  24. p.s. Little Clyde has mastered in 5-1/2 months what Raven still cannot do after 13 years.....drink from the faucet. She tries, and tries, to no avail. Paws up to him for being such a smart kitty.

    1. Clyde mastered this when he was about 10 weeks old! He loves water. I made a gif of him drinking. Watch for it on Fill-Ins #88.

  25. Yes it is heartbreaking news to get - but Clyde doesn't seem to know what's going on in his sweet little body - he's just a happy little boy. It's not fair - it never is - but I think Clyde will continue to be the brave and loving boy that he's been since his rescue with his sister Bee....and in your tender loving care he will live every minute of his life knowing unconditional love.

    Hugs to you....Pam
